Asasi TESL UiTM: Interview

UPDATED: 14th April 2012, 7.46AM

Now that all applicants have successfully completed their applications, it is time to worry bout the interview! Haha! No la juz kidding, don't get yourself too worked up only worrying bout it. Chill! ;D

So, since many people (with applicants topping the list) have been asking me for tips and advices regarding the coming interview, I've decided to save your time asking me anymore and post this entry. I'll tell you the little that I know about this stressful long-awaited day; Dos an Don'ts in attire and self presentation, what are commonly asked, and how do you get yourself picked.

Basically, the interview is carried out to filter out the applicants who meet the SPM grade requirements on paper but fail to bring themselves in communicating orally using the English language. However, don't think that spoken skills in this case means that you're expected to speak super fluent without a single grammatical error. No. The Asasi course is after all a preparatory program and there's still plenty of time to learn. :)

What is important however is that you have a basic command of the language, enough to engage in everyday conversations and this is what shall be tested in the interview. Please understand that this interview is not specifically aimed at testing your knowledge on certain aspects of the language, but rather a wholesome check to see if you can converse or otherwise. Simple.

Before I proceed, I'd like to apologise if any of my points here are outdated due to changes that took place AFTER my batch (2008) (cuz it's 1.48am and I'm yawning like a cow, I can't do any research in this condition so I'm just writing down what I experienced before). Happy reading!

Attire and Self Presentation

Before I proceed with the dos and don'ts, I'd like to remind you that you have applied for a course in the Education faculty of UiTM (if you had applied for this course in other universities, though most of the points here may apply there as well, there might still be slight differences, perhaps in the dressing code and stuffs) and regardless of whether or not you want to be a teacher, the faculty remains as one of the many platforms for measuring the level, mindset and personalities of teachers all over Malaysia. Therefore, even if you don't have the slightest bit of interest to persue a career in the teaching field, please respect the profession and adhere to the standards that apply.

Dos & Don'ts

1) Wear something formal
girls: the safest and best choice would be baju kurung.
guys: long-sleeved shirt with a nice formal tie and slacks; remember, no skinnies and no cartoon ties. Two big no-nos there)

2) Shoes
girls: get something with a bit of heel. Nothing too bare, but peep toes are fine.
guys: any leather work shoes (I've no idea what you call those :p) Choose dark colours, avoid white. x)

3) Hair
girls: Pin your fringes nicely and do anything to keep you looking tidy and clean. If your hair is coloured, you should either decolour it or wear a scarf.
guys: It's not the time to test out your new Gatsby hair dye as well, keep your hair nice and tidy, don't look too greasy.

4) Bags/Extra Luggage
girls: Use something that won't bother you; something not too big nor heavy, easy to carry around and avoid accessories too striking; you wouldn't want your bags and loop earrings to stand out more than you.
guys: it's better to keep your wallet in your pocket and leave everything else at home (except for your documents, plz don't forget)

Self-Presentation

There really isn't a necessity for me to break this up into girls and guys categories cuz it pretty much applies to both. Just use your common sense and things should be okay ;)

1) Be friendly; you might bump into your interviewers in the toilet or around the parking lot or whtever, and you wouldn't want to leave a bad first impretion now would you? Talk with your fellow interviewees if you think you're sweating too much, get to know each other, you guys might end up being lifelong friends. :)

2) Please wear perfume (enuff is said)

3) Don't be too competitive, I know everyone's fighting for a spot.

4) Work on your voice projection prior to the interview. Don't get the idea that a loud voice and clear articulation mode can be switched on whenever you wish. It might just cost you your chance.

Common Questions

Everybody wants a clue ea? If you have a personality then there's no real need of clues, but I'll give you guys anyways; just in case. :p

1) Tell me about yourself. (It usually starts with this; tell them about your hobbies, ambitions, working experience if you've had any. Avoid stating the facts they already know - full name, birthplace, age)

2) What does your family do? (Keep it short and simple, don't go blabbering bout your uncles and grandparents.)

3) Do you like to read? (DON'T LIE! These people are trained to twist your words around till they GET the truth. There are two choices you may make if you rly don't like to read: 1. Tell them about what you do read, anything at all - magazines, blogs, web reviews, tutorials etc. 2. Tell them you don't read at all and be rdy to hit the road.

4) Do you think you can be a good teacher? (Avoid giving them craps like "I love to teach" or "I was born to be a teacher", they ain't stupid; unless of course you have sold proof - acknowledged teaching experience, certificate, etc. Tell them about your good values, how would it help you in teaching, and tell them also about what you plan to do if you're a teacher. It would really add up to your chances).

How to get yourself picked!

Well, actually everything above are tips on how to get yourself picked as well; but here, I would like to give you some extra tips that your interviewees won't request for but instead, would be waiting for.

1) Just be yourself; it is always easier to get tongue tied and look stupid if you start lying about yourself, stating bogus facts about yourself and stuffs cuz unless you're a great lier, you would most likely get caught. Besies, if you think you're worthy a spot in the course, then whatever for would you need to lie? It's easier to be yourself, much safer thats for sure and you know exactly whether or not you are fit for the course. It's that simple. Plus, they're gonna be asking you about yourself anyways.

2) Don't degrade or put down any of your fellow counterparts during your interview. It would automatically send you off course.

3) Talk with confidence, but stay humble. (Again, voice projection is largely important)

4) Telling them about your interest to be a teacher is not enuff, let them know you're willing and able to learn well.

5) Tell them what advantages you might have; vocational skills or wtever.

6) Stay calm, don't cross your legs, don't get fidgety, sweating is fine but don't show it.

Yes, these are some normal things expected out of an interviewee, but then again, you can't play any of these right without practice. Therefore, get your friends or neighbours or pets to watch you practice and you'll be fine. ;D

Good Luck applicants! xD

Oh one more thing, if you have any further questions, please check out my FAQ page before posting me your Q ye. Thx!

Hye again!! haha Actually, I have a few questions if you don't mind me asking..

1. Do we have to wear baju kurung during the classes or can wear t-shirt and jeans je?

2. What is the best broadband to use there? (haha! cuz I kinda wanna make a survey early)

3. Asrama die duduk dlm dorm ke? or in room of 4 people?

Thank you sooo much for your time and effort! ;D

Lin O said...

Nyna: haha no problem ;D

1. baju kurung is compulsory every monday and friday only. the rest of the days you may wear shirts and jeans, however, your shirt sleeve must be atleast till your elbow. (rules are rules. :p)

2. broadband eh. im not sure cuz i only rely on the faculty's free WIFI. haha. (xmampu la broadband :p) hwever, most of my friends are using celcom n its fine. ;)

3. the hostels are rooms of 4 for girls and (if i'm not mistaken) room of 6 for the guys.

(you all did I think :p) i know tht some of you are goin for the intrview this weekend while other next week, well dont get too worried (or too excited HAHA) just yet, 2 days isn't too late to brush up your speaking skills! the intrview is all about speaking, so dont think about the questions. they can ask you ANYTHING. just get familiar with the language again (i know it's been long since spm. hehe), speak english to your family, to yourself, and even to your cat if you have one. you'd be just fine. ;D

the written test wouldn't be graded. haha. yes2, you'd have to write a simple essay. just to test your writing skills. no wrries ;D

anonymous: haha! r you the one that asked me about this Q in formspring? i've answered you there. haha. dont wry too much about it, as long as you don't say you were born to be become a teacher, you'd do fine. :)

tara: you're most welcome. :) goodluck this weekend!

izzati: you're welcome sis. haha! don't worry too much loh. most probably, there won't be that many interviewers. usually it'll just be 2/3. and one of them wouldn't even be asking you anything, they'd be checking through your documents. kalau interviewers ada 10 pon, they cant eat you. xp haha

Lin O said...

adibah: if i'm not mistaken, you'd get an hour to complete your essay. that's why you're only required to write a short essay of around 250-300 words. If i'm not mistaken la.. whatever it is, read the instructions you get nnt la. :)

hakim: congrats bro! you're most welcome. ;D

dzulfikri: haha. that's a definite hyperbole. lol. there's gonna be 2 sessions each day right. maybe they'll be around 150 candidates per session. so, make sure you stand out okeh! :D

my interview is tomorrow and its already making me nervous.
your tips are really useful , i was blank before but now i know exactly what to expect for tomorrow. thanks (:

Lin O said...

dzulfikri: haha! no problem dear. as long as the intrview isn't up yet, ask away! :p lol, they're gonna choose only 10% of the candidates interviewed. That's about 300 out of 3000 candidates all over malaysia.

between maktab and tesl uitm. well, it depends rly, what type of learning environment you like. i've nvr been to maktab before but from what i heard from a couple of friends there is that maktab is very much like a boarding school. you go to class in the morning and even if you have gaps between classes, you can't go back to your room or anything. you must be around campus. and stuffs like that la. its pretty much stricter in maktab as compared to tesl uitm. :)

asma: haha! good luck ! xD

frances: oh rly?? sorry to hear that, idk why you weren't accepted, maybe your other requirements weren't strong enough? don't wry dear, there'll alwys be other choices ;)

ayssya: hey you're welcome. goodluck! :D

yana, illyaa, dzulfikri, syafiqa, anonymous: heyy you guys! the day's finally here eh! tho this reply might be a lil too late for some of you, i'm gonna answer anyways. the essay isn't necessarily gonna be about current issues. it can be about anything at all. like i said before, it would help to know what's goin on around the world but theres no need to memorize the whole newspaper ok. lol.
and another thing, don't think just because you're from the village or even the jungle for that matter, know that all of you hve the same chance and its just a matter of fighting for it! remember, the intrview is not just about your speaking ability, but also self-presentation. have confidence and don't compare yourself to other ppl. know tht you can do it! ;D

ps: you guys online pkul bpe neh?? xtito ke? HAHA! xp

the thing that i really wanna ask u is that..i have applied for diploma perguruan TESL at KUIS...n tmrrw i have an interview..
so..i just wanna knw...is there any difference in the interview between asasi n diploma..?
n hope u'll answer this..even xde kena mngena wit uitm..plez..
again...thanx!

Lin O said...

heyy! you're so welome!
haha! firstly, i'd have to say, i didn't do any research before answering this, so just bear with me ea. :D
the difference between the two courses - diploma and asasi; is that asasi is just a preparatorial course for students to further into tesl degree, whereas diploma is already part of a teaching course before the student enters degree or what not. So, you can say that diploma is of a higher rank as compared to asasi, but of course, asasi is only 1 year, while diploma is 3 yrs (correct me if i'm wrong yea:D).

In terms of the interview pulak, maybe the general form would be almost entirely similar to that of asasi tesl, however, maybe they'd stress a little more on your teaching qualities, why you'd want to be a teacher, and maybe what you'd want to do after the course and stuffs. you get the picture? :D

Anonymous said...

thank u very2 much sis Lin..!!! :))

Dear Princess: hola! The main components of a TESL program are courses on TEACHING and courses on the ENGLISH language. So basically you learn in depth about the language and also learn how to teach. :)

Dear sis, before all the nonsense I'm about to blabber on and on after this, I'd like to thank you for the tips that you had posted in your blog! Great tips! Simple but great still!

And so, let's move on to the blabbering part, shall we?

I'll be going through the interview for the asasi TESL this Saturday and i'm practically drenched with sweat and is currently having a nervous break down.

Many of my acquaintances say that I shouldn't be, since my spoken English is QUITE (just quite) good and that I could at least talk fluently. But the problem is; i'm not one to actually take notice of the world and likes to live in my own sweet little black hole, in which could be summarized as I-don't-know-ANYTHING-about-the-current-issues-or-news for that matter! i am what they call... what's the Malay idiom again... "katak di bawah tempurung"? or something like that....

I didn't even know that our prime minister had changed before my friends ACCIDENTALLY talked about him...

what should i do or say if I don't know the answers to any of the questions concerning the current issues (since i don't even know any of the current issues) they'd given to me?

Oh! the pressures killing me! I don't want to die then and there...

Please give me some tips, sis! (;____;)

PS: the last time I had been to an interview, the interviewer practically bombarded me with a question of the current issue then (which you should already know) that I didn't know, so, without even thinking, I just said, "I'm sorry, sir. but I don't have the answer to your question." but i guess, that wasn't a good enough of an answer for him, so, he kept on asking the same question with just a bit of twist here and turn there, but I know it is STILL the same question.

So, how on earth could I answer the same question in which I already said that I don't have the answer to.

In the end, in the eyes of others who didn't really quite understand what had happened, it seemed as if i didn't know any of the answers to any of his questions in which, was actually only one question. Thus, that's where my phobias for interviews started.

Hello sis :)
Your post helps me a lot, in building my confidence.
My interview session is on this Saturday, and heck I'm freaking out!
Basically, I consider myself as a good writer. Well at least I am, if I compared to my ability to speak in English fluently.
I'm quite shy and timid and I stutter a lot if I had to speak in English.
Got any solutions in avoiding this problem besides converse with people? I just couldn't help but to stutter T.T

hey sis, i've read everything in your blog about tesl..i actually got the interview as well..quite nervous right now! im just gonna ask a quick question here, if you dont mind :)i've run out of certified copies of my spm result and some other certs..they didnt really asked for a certified copy, but do you think i might have a problem with that? thank you, would love to hear from you soon! :)

Hey all of you guys! I love this time of the year cuz my blog suddenly becomes so festive. haha. neways, congrats and good luck to all of you! thx for reading my blog posts and honestly, i rly would've liked to answer all of you personally, but i ain't got the time yalls. so sorry!

lots of you've been asking for tips and tricks, but i rly think this whole blog post is a major tip alrdy. so sorry guys, i don't hve nething else up my sleeves for yalls. i am however gonna answer some of the more specific Qs.

1. any group discussions? - No.

2. reading materials, do u have to read and memorize the national education policy? - No, they expect you to know some current issues, but not the edu policy, no worries. ;)

3. sentence structures, how long should you answer ur Qs in the intrview. - Tell you what, just calm yourself down nanti, and be yourself. speak how you would naturally speak in English and that would be the best manner of speech to use.

4. certified copies of certificates - if its stated in the surat tawaran tht you'd have to bring em then yes they should be there. Forgive me if i'm wrong, but they'd most probably wanna keep the photocopied certs for future reference, so i'm quite certain tht they'd need especially the important copies like ur spm result slip and what not.

tht's all for now, good luck guys! :D

Lindonut said...

no problem guys. ;)

Assalamualaikum akak..

Firstly nak tanyalah, asasi UiTM kat Shah Alam sama tempat dgn UiTM kat Shah Alam ke? Ke lain tempat?

Saye tgh confuse sama ada nak amek tesl or bidang sains..

Kalau kita amek tesl, boleh jadik ape eh?

btw, thank sgt sbb akq buat byk post pasal asasi tesl. Bila baca pasal asasi tesl mcm best pulak tp tulah, still tak sure nak mohon asasi tesl or asasi sains hayat untuk first choice. Confuse sgt..

and, kalau amek asasi tesl boleh ke lanjut smpai ke luar negara nnt?

p/s : Sorry byk soalan, just curious nak taw.. Siang malam asyik terpkir sama ada nak asasi tesl or asasi sains hayat... hmm...

Liyana Othman said...

waalaikumussalam Sabila,

hey sorry for my late reply ya. haven't been feeling too well lately.

alright, here we go.

1. asasi TESL uitm shah alam is still in shah alam, but di kampus seksyen 17; not in the main campus. itu asasi tesl je la.

2. kalau amek tesl blh jd apa...there's a LOT of things/paths you can venture into if you take up tesl because it's a combination of many areas. you can venture into teaching/lecturing/training, corporate affairs/human resource/public relations, psychology, literature.

3. blh lanjut smpai ke luar negara ke? well, ada my friends yg make it overseas, and the most of us tak. the thing is, kalau ur aim is to belajar overseas, pursuing science would land you a better chance at it. that's my honest opinion.

so, decide wisely sabila. follow your interest la, if you have no interest in the subject then it's best not to pursue it la. :)

Nicq: Heyy, I hope it went well for you yesterday! ^^ Sorry couldn't reply any sooner, but all my tips are here already. ;D

Anon 2: How did it go yesterday? Did you have to sing and dance? haha. It's really subjected to the interviewers.

Anon 3: Oh no worries about that, it's fine. They'll change the subject if they want you to stop or talk about something else. ;)

This blog have helped me to go through the interview. I had to sing in front of the panel! Quite embarrassing because my voice is trembling so I can't show my full potential in singing *perasan bagus*.
Anyway, thank you for all of the posts bout TESL. Harap dapat >.<
